Taking a Bite Out of Waste

Mary Ann Boyer, Anne Sudduth, and Springside Chestnut Hill Academy's CFO Frank Aloise and science teacher Carie Szalay presented "Taking a Bite out of Waste" at the National Business Officers Association Annual Meeting in Washington DC on February 28, 2017. The presentation included the school's "Think Outside the Bottle" campaign to encourage water bottle refilling, an Ugly Mug Drive to stock a green coffee station, waste stations that include compost bins, and the adoption of reusable plates and flatware. More than 21 disposable or single-use products were eliminated as a result of the cafeteria's zero-waste initiatives, and the school was the first in the state to earn Certified Green Restaurant designation. The school is proud to highlight its green footprints and showcase how SCH has saved resources, reduced environmental impacts, and increased student awareness across its entire campus.
